Daytona Bike Week 2011

We rented a beach house in Flagler Beach on A1A with Shawn & Cheryl Young that had a panoramic view of the Atlantic for our stay in Florida for the 70th Annual Daytona Beach Bike Week.

But first we had to load our bikes up in 10 degree weather (17 below with the wind chill!! Brrr...), and drive 1500 miles to Daytona. After arriving on Saturday and unpacking, we made a quick trip downtown Daytona to cruise Main St. Flagler is about 20 minutes north of Daytona Beach, just far enough away from the traffic, and the ride down A1A along the coast is breathtaking. On Sunday, we wanted to hit the Harley Davidson bike display, get my HOG event pin, and stop by Rossmeyer's Harley-Davidson, the worlds largest HD dealer. Little did we know that the stop there would have major implications for Shawn, as the Heritage Softail we came down with wasn't coming back to Maine....and the bulk of our afternoon was spent exploring the dealership (which is huge) while Shawn negotiated a deal for a new Ultra Classic Pics here

Pure vanity made me buy this pic, mostly because it's one of the few I can share of Jane. It was taken on A1A near our house on our way to Daytona

So, with a brand new bike for Shawn and Cheryl, what better thing to do but ride. right? So we went on a 275 mile loop thru the Ocala National Forest and back. Great day for a ride! Pics of our day here

Tuesday we headed back down to Main St to check out the vendors and bikes. Temp was in the high 80's, great day to walk around and see the sights. We headed down to Ponce Inlet Lighthouse for a climb up Florida's tallest light and a visit to the Fresnel Museum as well. On the way back, we got to ride on the World's Most Famous Beach! Pics here

Wednesday was another busy day. We rode north to visit St. Augustine. It's the oldest city in the United States and has some neat history. A great ride up A1A along the ocean, we managed to see an alligator farm, climb the St Augustine lighthouse, and see the fort built by the Spanish in 1672, Castillo de San Marcos. Wed Pics here

We we watching the weather, and on Thursday it rained in the morning, so we thought, 'let's go to Disney World'! We visited Epcot, and snagged reservations to dine at Bistro de Paris We missed most of the rain by the time we got to the park and enjoyed a great day and a great meal! Pics here

Friday was another sunny day! First a visit to Rossmeyer's Harley so Shawn could spend his gift certificate. We were pleasantly surprised to find the Budweiser Clydesdales setting up for a parade! Then south down towards the Kennedy Space Center, a ride along the coast, a stop at the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge, and back! Pics Here

Saturday we had to pack and leave. Mike had called a few days earlier, and convinced us to meet him and Sarah on our way back home, so we swung west to Charlotte, and they drove over to meet us for dinner. It was great to see both of them, if only for an evening. We also got to see a semi-truck jammed in a toll booth..great road trip, great riding, great friends....Pics Here
